     Simple Pleasures is a compilation of local recreational and volunteer activities, with an
     emphasis on those that are simple, healthy, non-materialistic, community-building,
     supportive of the environment, supportive of the arts, etc. While most of these activities
     are available no matter where you live, the primary focus of this page is on the
     Chippewa Valley of west-central Wisconsin.    Last Updated 10/24/2007.

Physical Phun - It's more than just fun!  Moderate exercise four times a week has been shown to improve health, sleep, & attitude. Moderate means that you increase your heart rate for about 30 minutes.   (- Warm Seasons,  - Cold Seasons,  - All Seasons.)
Bike - There are several very nice biking trails in the area. Bike rentals are available at UWEC among other places; child trailers and tandems can also be rented. Chippewa Valley Cycling Club (for racers)  
Camp - "Rough it" a little ... enjoy Wisconsin's outdoors by living in it. See WI State Parks & Campgrounds   
Canoe - Rental canoes & kayaks are available.  Typical pricing is $20 for 24 hours.   Shuttle services are also available for about $25 to take you and your canoe to a starting point and pick you up down river.  These shuttle canoe trips typically last 2-5 hours.  
Dance - The Eau Claire International Folk Dancers - recreational dancing every Friday at 7:30 downtown Eau Claire. No experience required and no partner required (most dances are line or circle dances)!  Calendar

Farmers Market - (okay, buying groceries is not exactly a form of exercise, but their fresh vegetables will contribute to your overall health and energy.)  1997 Schedule: June 8 - October 25, Wed & Sat 7:30a - 1p, Thurs 3p-6p. Located in Eau Claire, across from the Post Office on N. Barstow. Wednesdays  
& Saturdays
Ice Skate - There are 17 free outdoor city ice rinks in Eau Claire alone! Indoor rinks include Eau Claire's Hobbs municipal ice skating rink ($3 adult, $2 youth), Altoona's Hobbs Sport Center ($1 each, $2 family), and the Ice Arena of Chippewa Falls (free). Rental skates are available. For info on warming house hours, contact your local parks & recreation department.  
Rollerblade - Rental skates are available by the hour or the day.  Typical pricing is $3/hr or $9 for 24 hrs.  
Ski Cross-Country - Local Ski Trails & Ski Clubs, Other Wisconsin Ski Trails, Trail Chart- from the WI Dept of Tourism.  
Tennis - List of free courts - free  
Snowshoe - Use an existing trail or forge your own! Rental snowshoes are available at Beaver Creek Reserve ($2/day) and UWEC Recreation (for univ. student / staff). Beaver Creek has trails just for snowshoers. You can also snowshoe at most county forests and parks, such as Big Falls and Coon Fork, but stay off the ski and snowmobile trails. Swim - There are several free beaches in the area. Outdoor pools include the Eau Claire Fairfax Pool (June-August, $1.75 - $2.75) and the Chippewa Falls outdoor pool. In the winter, several high school indoor pools are open to the public evenings and weekends at a modest fee (EC fees - adult $1.50, youth $0.75, family $3.00).  
Volleyball - the Eau Claire Parks & Rec. department organizes indoor & outdoor leagues.  
Walk - Walking outdoors in thesun and fresh air is the best, but for bad weather days, both the London Square and the Oakwood Hills shopping malls welcome walkers from about 7 am to 10 am, before the stores open.

Beaver Creek Reserve / Wise Nature Center - Web Page. Learn about the environment at this excellent interpretive nature center. Hobbs Observatory - Web Page* - View heavenly bodies with their computer-operated telescopes.  Open every Saturday at dusk from May thru October (weather permitting), with special programs year round on the third Saturday of each month at 8pm. Literacy Volunteers of America - Literacy Volunteers of America - tutor adults one-on-one or in small groups in reading, writing and English-speaking skills.
